Grade 5 Field Trip to Learn About Producing Steaks


Grade 5 students continued their inquiry into how goods and services are produced as part of their Trade unit under the trandisciplinary theme of How We Organize Ourselves. Students specifically have been investigating how goods and services are produced and got the chance to see this first hand with a trip to Qingdao Guohui Food Company, owned and operated by the family of Henry Yan, a grade 5 student. Before entering the factory, students had to thoroughly wash their hands, wear rubber boots, put on masks and hair nets, and get blasted with warm air to remove any bacteria that could contaminate the meat. Students were then shown through several rooms demonstrating how beef was processed into different products including steaks for consumption all around China. The grade 5 students asked many questions and walked away from the factory better informed about how goods are produced.
