PYP Magnolia and Sunflower Cottages

Welcome to our new Magnolia and Sunflower PYP space. We began our week by being reflective of our learning and shared ideas for our Essential Agreement so that we may all have a safe and fun learning environment.

Essential Agreements

 

We are excited about working towards becoming readers, writers, and illustrators. Our teachers Ms. Cecilia & Ms. Jessica shared with us their book Sometimes. They shared with us how their idea was born to create their own characters of Colitas y Trencitas. The book is about feelings and how we can connect with others both when we are happy or sad. We then had the opportunity to let our creativity flow and illustrate how we can connect to others.

During our morning literacy block we experience language in various ways to help us grow as both readers and writers. In connection with our current unit of inquiry on light and sound we were very excited to use the reading phones for independent reading.

Our second unit of inquiry is How the World Works and our central idea is: Knowing that light and sound have different properties helps us to understand it as an essential resource. After doing a sound experiment in class we watched an episode of The Magic School Bus that confirmed what we had discovered…SOUND IS VIBRATION!

We really enjoy unpacking our lines of inquiry by working together to unscramble all the words. We then take some time to share our initial thoughts about what we think it means.

To help us think and collaborate we created a life-size thinking map on our classroom floor! We shared our ideas and experiences about how light and sound are a part of our world and we recorded them on our thinking map with both illustrations and words.

Thinking map

One of our lines of inquiry is: Properties of light and sound. To help us experience it first hand we did an awesome light experiment. We followed the steps of the scientific method and formulated our individual hypothesis about would happen when we spray water onto M&Ms and let the light shine on it. We were so excited to observe the bright colors from the M&Ms create a rainbow. We concluded that when light reflects on water it creates a rainbow of color! All of this led to think about how after it rains and the sun shines we get to see a rainbow in the sky, but we never see one at night.

Thank you Noah, Brendon, Paul, and Mr. Brendan Madden for an amazing learning experience. Our DP Physics students who prepared for us numerous sound experiments in connection with our unit of inquiry and as a CAS project for them. We really enjoyed how they helped us to get a visual of what vibration would look like if we could see it, we also felt vibrations, and heard various sounds…bringing us back to an important property of sound…VIBRATION!

Magnolia PYP

We had fun working together and using finger puppets and story cubes to help us write a story. We learned that when working as a team it’s important that we give everyone an opportunity to share ideas. We all came up with great and funny stories and shared them aloud with another.

我们非常开心可以在一起工作,用手指玩偶和故事魔方帮助我们写作故事。我们明白了作为一个团队一起工作时,给每个人机会以表达自己的观点是非常重要的。我们都想出了一些精彩有趣的故事,并与他人大声分享。

To help us foster a warm sense of community in our classroom we show our appreciation of each other in a very special way every Friday during our morning class meeting. We hold a rock heart in our hand and give a compliment to the person sitting next to us and pass it all around until everyone has received a compliment. It’s a great way to close our week and it brings a smile to our hearts.

为了帮助我们在教室内营造一种温馨的集体感,我们在每周五的班级早会上用特别的方式展示我们对对方的感激。我们手中捧着一颗石头心,给予坐在身边的人以赞美,并不断传递,直到每个人都获得赞美。这是一个很好结束一周生活的方式,它为我们的内心带来欢笑。

An important aspect our school and IB mission statement is to work towards peace. We talked about how in order to share peace with the rest of the world we must first begin in our local environment…our classroom. We each took some time to be reflective and think about what each of us can do in our classroom to work towards a peaceful environment for us all.
