The Busy Bees of Plum Blossom | 梅花班简报

On behalf of the Plum Blossom classroom community, I would like to thank all families for the positive support and enthusiasm you shared with us during Literacy Week. A week full of literacy activities not only enhanced your children’s love and curiosity of books, stories, and writing, but also helped develop language acquisition.

我谨代表梅花班全体成员,感谢所有家长在文学周的热情的大力支持!这一周进行的文学活 动不仅提升了孩子们对书本,故事以及写作的热爱的好奇心,也在语言习得方面带来很大助 益!

Every morning during the Montessori work cycle, children are always busy working on materials from all areas of interest. Lately, many of our younger students are fascinated with the Practical Life materials while the older ones are more interested in working on challenging materials that they had yet to try. It has been an amazing experience to see them getting much more comfortable, confident and independent in their learning environment.

每天上午的蒙特梭利工作时间里,孩子们兴致盎然地进行各个区域的工作。最近,很多小朋 友热衷于日常生活区的工作,而大孩子则对于更有挑战性的工作感兴趣。非常高兴看到孩子 们在教室里更加自在,自信,以及独立!

In the area of PYP, we began our discussion about Space (Unit of Inquiry). We defined the word space and came up with different examples of space as well as how we use space in many different ways. We walked around our classroom to see the kitchen, bathroom, the rug, etc. We identified the difference between one space and another as well as the function of each space. You may support your child by talking about spaces at home like the bedroom, living room, kitchen, bathroom, etc. Learning about their daily environment will help your child develop a basic understanding of physical spaces. We also had fun making big/small spaces using yarn to see how a bigger space can contain more objects than a smaller space. Some children have independently created narrow walking spaces using the Red Rods.

In our other unit, Stories (year-round Unit), Children have really loved being told/read the same story over and over again. In order to activate learning through the arts, we have implemented a short drama-based instruction by acting out our favorite story, “Little Red Riding Hood.” We focused our questions around the characters in the story and the sequence of the story. Children were able to identify the characters in the story, how the characters are feeling at various points in the story, and identify the beginning/middle/end of the story. The purpose of these activities is for the children to understand the elements of a story; again, you can always help to support your child by reading a story and discussing the elements of it as mentioned above.

Please be informed that Monday, April 2nd was our last day for Library book-checkouts. We will not check out any books prior to the school break. We would like to thank you very much for all your kind support from home in reminding your child of his/her responsibility over the books they checked out from the library. We have benefited so much from the school library as one of our learning sources.

Our busy weeks ended well with Friday’s reading buddies and the Peter Pan performances. It was great to see lots of children coming with their family to enjoy the show. As the children are now familiar with the story of Peter Pan, we are going to integrate it into our unit of inquiry to enhance story comprehension.

繁忙的一周以“阅读小伙伴”活动和《彼得·潘》音乐剧而结束。很高兴看到很多家庭带着孩子 来观看演出。现在孩子们已经熟悉这个故事了,我们会把这个故事和探究单元结合起来,增 进孩子们的理解。
